3 Killer Cloud Skills That Will Get You Hired Today

By David Linthicum for Nelson Hilliard

Those that are looking to make their way into cloud computing are looking for mad skills that will pay the bills.   Here are three of my recommendations.

One of the most common questions that I’m asked is: What cloud skills do you need that will get you hired quickly?    First, keep in mind that this is an emerging area, thus what employers are looking for is constantly shifting.    Second, even if they do hire you for a specific skill, you’ll be asked to retrain and re-tool as the cloud technology matures.

Here are three of the skills that will likely get you hired right now:

Any AWS certification.   My advice to those leaving college is always the same, get AWS certified.   Not matter if you take the developer or architect path around AWS skills, companies are focused on those certifications.

There are those that call out the issues around focusing on a provider certification to make all the difference when looking for qualified candidates.   However, you must look at it from the company’s standpoint.   They really are not qualified to vet cloud talent, and thus are looking for shortcuts these days to staff up.    Certifications are an easy way to validate some degree of talent, take advantage of it.

IoT and Cloud.     There are two pushes right now.   First, moving to the cloud.  Second, having all machines talk to all other machines and humans.   Combining the two, and you have cloud-based IoT.     Again, AWS has a strong offering here which is good to know, but please also understand what Microsoft and Google offer.   Many employers are looking for those that understand most public clouds, and most IoT systems on those clouds.

Serverless or container anything.   Once again, we have a few buzzwords out there that few understand, but all think they need.    The funning thing about these skills is that you’re likely to get hired for possessing them, but you may not use them right away.    Companies are looking to move to serverless, containers, or both but have not really done much to move the ball in that direction.   But, they are hiring.

Good luck in your job hunt, check back here for updates.
